From Greenpointers, this photo and a report that earlier this afternoon, the driver of a stolen car hit a young woman on Manhattan Avenue, between India and Huron. The Greenpoint Gazette reports that it received an e-mail tip earlier in the day of a shoot-out on Nassau Avenue. Unclear for now how the two are related, whether a suspect is in custody, and whether the woman’s injuries were fatal. Appears she was taken to Bellevue in critical condition. We’ll try to figure out what happened as soon as we can. In the meantime, our thoughts go out to the woman’s family.

Tonight: Williamsburg Walks Meeting
Tonight The L Magazine and NAG will host an informational meeting for this year’s Williamsburg Walks. As with last year, every Saturday in June and July, between the hours of noon and 9 pm, Bedford Ave will become a walker’s paradise, with street vendors, sidewalk chalk artists and on-foot pedestrians making Williamsburg’s main street feel like an extension of McCarren Park rather than a bustling boulevard.
While it seems like the event is a-go, there has been some controversy, with local business owners claiming the “street fair” actually hurts business. Looking to learn more about Williamsburg Walks or simply want to voice your opinion about the event? Head to the Williamsburg Walks Information Meeting at 7 pm tonight at the Swinging Sixties Senior Center, located at 211 Ainslie Street at Manhattan Ave.

Bridgewalkers: A New Series
There’s something addictive about walking over the Williamsburg Bridge. There must be, as every day, so many of your fellow neighborhoodies walk the 1.4-mile walk, a hundred feet in the air. The industrial latticework of red fading into Pepto Bismol may not be one of architecture’s greatest aesthetic accomplishments, but its quirkiness makes for a fitting and functional connection between Williamsburg’s laid-back land of artists and the bustling downtown resources of lower Manhattan. It’s also grounding and refreshingly tactical, an optimal place for clearing/organizing your mind.
We’re taking the opportunity to interview people on the bridge to find out what exactly makes the trek over the water so appealing. So if I throw myself in front of your bike one day, please consider stopping to answer some questions, or at least try not to run me over. Check out the first installment just below this post, and let us know when and why you walk the bridge.
Bridgewalkers: A Love Story
Vacant and skeletal but a week ago, the Williamsburg Bridge filled up with warm bodies stretching their winter legs and warming themselves in the late afternoon last Saturday, on what will now be officially known as “Thank God It’s Finally Spring Day.”
When I began to cross over around 6:30 pm, Brooklynites and Manhattanites alike were in stroll mode, mostly in small groups or couples, and one posse in particular caught my attention.
