Return to Foodies’ Paradise, TASTE Williamsburg Greenpoint 2014

TASTE Williamsburg/Greenpoint is an event food lovers look forward to every year. What could be more inviting than to sample food and drink from over 50 local restaurants, bakeries, wineries, breweries, and soft drink makers on the banks of the East River State Park? The feast’s emphasis on local products and restaurants is what really makes this event intimate and special. The fact that all the profits go to the completion of the Northside Town Hall Community and Cultural Center is just the sweet caramel icing on the date cake. Among the new establishments that joined the party this year were farm-to-table restaurant Delaware and Hudson, Franklin Street’s Viking-chic bar and restaurant, Dirck the Norseman, and Dona Chai, a maker of chai tea concentrate.

I started my sampling with an elegant and refreshing yellow pepper gazpacho with nuggets of fresh shrimp meat from The Elm. Nearby, Cubana Social offered a traditional gazpacho, a little peppery with robust flavors. Why stop at two starters when you can have three? I grabbed a bite of Hotel Delmano’s fig and cheese wrapped in thin slices of Sorrento ham, and I knew I was in the right place at the  right time.

Throw Back Thursday: Make yourself a Margabucha

Two years ago, Pamela Rossi of One Stop Beer Shop shared her recipe for a kombucha margarita, and we think it’s genius. Detox while you toxify, or toxify while you detox. Whatever you do, try this drink——it’s absolutely DELICIOUS. Today’s throwback:

“I wanted to create a drink with the pleasures of a tall, cool, fruity, salty margarita, and just the right kickstart to a 5 o’clock Friday night out, sans the calories. But why stop there? I decided to incorporate a probiotic drink to satisfy not only the “skinny girl” margarita goers, but our health conscious cravers too.  Born is Margabucha: Only 70 cals with the healthful benefits of kombucha!”

I became familiar with Sam Mason the night I ate at his Soho restaurant Tailor. Mason made a name for himself as the pastry chef/protégé to Wiley Dufresnse at WD-50, and Tailor was his first solo venture. One night my mom asked me to pick a restaurant where we could meet because she needed to tell me something. The meal was so amazing, I almost forgot that there was a reason why we were meeting. It turned out my mother wanted to tell me that she was sick. A long, hard road followed, after which she recovered fully, but Tailor gave us one great meal before the hard year ahead.

Mason accrued a reputation as a rocker chef, perhaps because of the tattoos up and down his arms, or perhaps because of his original IFC TV series, Dinner With The Band, wherein he prepares meals for his favorite bands in his Brooklyn loft. However, Mason’s newest venture may serve as proof that his rocker rebel spirit runs deeper.
