NYC Dept of Sanitation SAFE Disposal Event

The NYC Department of Sanitation is holding a SAFE (Solvents, Automotive, Flammable, Electronics) Disposal event in McCarren Park.

This is a great opportunity to dispose of harmful products like motor oil, mercury thermometers, ammonia, bleach, nail-polish remover, paint, turpentine and pesticides, as well medications and electronic devices. For more information visit www.nyc.gov/safedisposal.

$19.5 million Greenpoint Community Environmental Fund Now Accepting Proposals

The $19.5 million Greenpoint Community Environmental Fund (GCEF) is ready for  proposals for projects to improve Greenpoint’s environment. Go to their site for full information on how to apply. (Note: based on feedback at the September 25the Greenpoint Community Meeting, the deadline for submitting proposals has been extended to December 18, 2013).

If you plan to apply, sign up for one of the GCEF’s applicant workshops or webinars. These events will provide helpful information on the grant program and guide you through the application process.

Brooklyn Greenway Initiative’s PARK(ing) Day

Today, in Cobble Hill, the Brooklyn Greenway Initiative (BGI), along with cities, artists, activists and citizens around the globe will temporarily transform metered parking spaces into public parks and other social spaces, as part of an annual event called “PARK(ing) Day.”

BGI welcomes the public to join them for an afternoon of music, food and fun, all while supporting a good cause.

Help Determine How to Spend $19,500,000 in Greenpoint

Residents of Greenpoint, Brooklyn are invited to help in investing $19,500,000, obtained by the State of New York in a settlement with ExxonMobil, in “Environmental Benefit Projects” (EBPs) in the community. These EBPs will be designed to provide significant environmental improvements in Greenpoint and address environmental areas of concern for the community, such as water quality, groundwater, open space, reduction of toxic pollution, and air quality.
