Does long-shot mayoral candidate Tony Avella have a chance? Reid Pillifant takes a look.

Tony Avella notices the photograph of Michael Bloomberg just as he begins to sit down. It is a framed clipping from the New York Sun, trumpeting the mayor’s proletarian tastes, and the headline proclaims this little pizzeria near City Hall: “Where Mayor Bloomberg Goes For Lunch.”

Broadway Goes Public; Domino Left Waiting

May 19, 2009 By Reid Pillifant Leave a Comment

bway_triangle_midsizeEliot Brown at the New York Observer reports that the proposed rezoning of the Broadway Triangle has begun the seven-month public approval process. The “long list” of projects announced by City Planning Monday does not include the former Domino Sugar Factory, meaning the final vote on that project is not likely to happen until after Williamsburg gets a new City Council representative. (One more reason to come to the debate tonight.) And if you’re curious about another possible hold-up with regard to Domino, pick up a copy of the WG this week.

What Ales You: Coney Island Meets Greenpoint

May 19, 2009 By Tom Pavlich Leave a Comment

sideshow1Brouwerij Lane, Greenpoint’s most recent addition to the craft beer scene, has a big event lined up for Thursday May 21st from 7-9pm where they will be showcasing the Coney Island Craft Lagers. Coney Island Craft Lagers, brewed by Shmaltz Brewing Company (also known for Hebrew, “The Chosen Beer”), made their unofficial debut at the 2007 Mermaid Parade.

In America right now the ale is king, but Schmaltz has stepped it up and is producing unique lagers all paying homage to the Coney Island Sideshow. Brouwerij Lane will have all four of the currently available Coney Island Craft Lagers for sale this Thursday!

The Human Block Head is a thick dark robust lager, similar to a German Doppelbock, that weighs in at 10% alcohol. It has a little bit of sweetness and notes of dark fruit (think cherries or raisins). The Sword Swallower is the lager equivalent of an American pale ale, and perfect for this beautiful weather. It is light in color and very refreshing. Both of these beers will be available on tap for purchase in 8oz samples to enjoy in the store, or by the 64oz growler for take home.

Tonight: City Council Debate

May 19, 2009 By WG News + Arts Leave a Comment

33rd_district_debate_flyer1 Since David Yassky is running for Comptroller, the moment is upon us to begin thinking about who will be the next City Council representative for the 33rd District. Tonight, the New Kings Democrats will hold a debate between candidates for the Democratic nomination for the 33rd City Council District, which represents Brooklyn Heights, Greenpoint; parts of Williamsburg, Park Slope, Boerum Hill. Candidates include Isaac Abraham, Ken Baer, Doug Biviano, Ken Diamondstone, Steve Levin, Jo Anne Simon, and Evan Thies. Yes, the Steve Levin who said he will begin attending meetings. The debate will be held in the Harry Van Arsdale HS auditorium on North 6th St & Roebling, from 7:00-8:30pm. If you have even a mild interest in social issues, development, noise, bike lanes, or the best street taco’s on Bedford, you should really attend, as one of the candidates debating tonight may represent you next year.
