Uncle Louie G’s Ices to Open on Graham

May 12, 2009 By Stacey Brook Leave a Comment

One morning last week, I poked my head into the construction site for the newest Uncle Louie G’s Italian Ices franchise, just off the Graham Avenue L-stop, where it’s replacing the decades-old Sweets ‘N Things. (Sweets ‘n what Things? I always wondered.) As a lifelong customer of Ralph’s, I was wary of the place, but it only took about four minutes for Louie G’s charming proprietor, Michael LaMarca, to win me over.

LaMarca is a warm personality, who has already ingratiated himself with the businesses on the block and the old-timers in the neighborhood. “Everyone has been so nice and welcoming,” he tells me, before waving to someone arriving for work next door at Loco Burrito. “There’s my man!” he shouts, before telling me, “He makes me the best salads.”

Zoning Without a Plan and the Four Big Zoning Scams

May 11, 2009 By Tom Angotti Leave a Comment

Amanda Burden, Chairperson of the NY City Planning Commission, boasts that since 2002, the city has completed a record 94 rezonings for the most sweeping revision of land use regulations throughout the city’s five boroughs since the Zoning Resolution was rewritten in 1961.This massive rezoning effort supports the development priorities of the administration of Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who in 2007 introduced PlaNYC2030, a long-term plan to incorporate almost one million more residents by the year 2030.

But the city’s rezoning frenzy highlights two fundamental problems with its approach to our neighborhoods. One is that the zoning is not based on any comprehensive review of community needs and priorities or any long-range planning. In other words, it’s zoning without a plan.

The Bagpiper of North Brooklyn

May 8, 2009 By Philippe Theise Leave a Comment

the bagpiper of north brooklyn

On Tuesday night, walking near Leonard Street and Manhattan Avenue, I heard a harsh, melodious sound, and turned to see, through the rain, a lone bagpiper blasting away. Jim Basil, a local resident, said he practices three or four times a week in various neighborhood spots to prepare for bagpipe competitions held across the East Coast. Basil first heard the instrument at his grandfather’s funeral when he was 14, and knew then that he wanted to learn to play.

Two cyclists stopped to listen, and a man walked his dog straight to the source of the music, with the pet moving briskly, head up, like a hotel concierge crossing the lobby to greet a welcome guest. After they had passed, Basil headed for the handball court at the northern end of the park, and began playing and pacing carefully along the median cement wall.
