The Unfancy Food Show

June 30, 2009 By Joann Kim Leave a Comment

The much anticipated annual Unfancy Food Show was held this past Sunday at East River Bar, celebrating all things local, organic, sustainable, artisanal and Brooklyn. Organized by Annaliese Griffin and Tom Mylan, the show included nearly twenty vendors supplying a vast mouth-watering and curious mix of edible goods from raw chocolate and rooftop grown vegetables to authentic kimchee and peppery beef jerky. It was a packed mosh pit scene with sweat trickling from the pores of both skin and tongue. I arrived too late to sample Marlow & Sons’ brisket and whitefish sandwiches, or Salvatore’s freshly cut prosciutto sandwiches, but I left content at having tasted some of the best produce, cheese and sweets on this side of the East River.

kimchee unfancy foodBest In Show award undeniably goes to Mama O’s Kimchee, where Kheedim Oh (of The Beatards) and his mother have successfully created an authentic kimchee which isn’t overwhelming to the unfamiliar, while maintaining the pride of a Korean foodie such as this writer.  I was stricken with a nostalgia upon sampling the kimchee that was just the slightest bit undercured and salty, maintaining the perfect balance of crunch and spice.  You may get some at Marlow & Daughters, Foragers, and Jeffreys.

At Pete’s Candy: A STOOP-ID TALE w/Kimber VanRy

June 29, 2009 By WG News + Arts Leave a Comment

31_36_gershdrinksbeer1_z1Tonight at 7:30pm, Pete’s Candy Store (709 Lorimer St) presents Kimber VanRy as part of their bi-monthly lecture series they call Open City Dialogue.

Few things better evoke the poetic pleasures of a Brooklyn summer than drinking a beer on the stoop on a hot evening.  Just one little thing, though: it’s ILLEGAL!  So Kimber VanRy found out last summer when he received a $25 summons for the nefarious act in his home hood of Prospect Heights.  He could have just paid the small fine–but where’s the fun in that? Mr. VanRy decided instead that he would fight for his right to party! After numerous court cases and even a New York Times profile, Mr. VanRy is ready to give the full tale!

Kimber VanRy grew up in rural Western New York State and has been a Brooklyn resident for more than 13 years. He has worked for more than eleven years in the stock footage and photography industry, and currently manages an international film-licensing partner program reaching more than 35 countries worldwide. VanRy holds a B.A. in English with a Minor in US History from the State University of NY at Buffalo and a M.S. in Historic Preservation Planning from Eastern Michigan University. VanRy , his wife and two sons currently reside in the Prospect Heights neighborhood in Brooklyn.

Open City Dialogue  (OCD) is a bi-monthly lecture series unraveling on alternating Mondays in the backroom of Pete’s.  Short (35-40 minute) lectures are woven together from the common thread of people’s obsessions, with guests coming from allover Greater New York. Whether academic or crackpot; celebrated or unsung, our lecturers all have something to tell you…..

Crest Hardware Art Show and Crest Fest 2009

June 27, 2009 By Joann Kim Leave a Comment

crest hardware 2009

Recently the Crest Hardware Art Show opened with a celebration that extended from the store itself to a full day of festivities at nearby Macri Park. Despite it being a bit of a dreary and rainy day, people strolled through the park and enjoyed great music played by various bands: from Twin Shadow and In Cadeo, Wizardry and Brian Bonz. DJs kept the crowd afloat between gigs and the entire day was spent tapping and swaying whilst browsing through art & design provided by Artists & Fleas and feasting on BBQ from Papcitos.

What Ales You: Dark Matter at Brooklyn Brewery

June 26, 2009 By Tom Pavlich Leave a Comment

2007_05_brooklyn-brewery-thumbAnywhere you go in the country you are bound to find a craft brewery or brew pub serving up fresh beers for the local public, but here in North Brooklyn we are very privileged to have one of the best. The brewery is located right in our back yard near the border of Greenpoint and Williamsburg, and it is very easy for New Yorkers to take such a great institution for granted. Everyone knows their beers, especially Brooklyn Lager, but occasionally you find one on tap, or cask that you have never seen before…and this weekend that beer is Dark Matter.

A couple months ago Garrett Oliver, the brew master of Brooklyn Brewery, spoke to the New York City Home Brewers’ Guild at one of their monthly meetings. He discussed the the brewery’s beers, told stories, explained that they are not relocating but expanding their operation right here on North 11th Street in Williamsburg, and he also brought beers for everyone to taste.

Most people are familiar with Brooklyn Brown, one of the flagship ales that the brewery makes. Brooklyn Brown is a fine American Brown Ale with hints of caramel, rich chocolate undertones, just a hint of coffee, and balanced perfectly with hops. Brooklyn Brewery originally only made this ale as a holiday specialty, but it has since become a year-round offering…and for good reason. One of the beers that Mr. Oliver brought to share with the Home Brewer’s Guild was a beer called Dark Matter. He explained that it was a beer that was brewed specifically for himself and the other members of the brewery team to enjoy. Dark Matter is the Brooklyn Brown ale aged 9 months in Woodford Reserve bourbon barrels. The already delicious brown ale picks up hints of vanilla, a touch of bourbon, and a bit of booze during this aging creating one of the most drinkable bourbon aged beers out there.
