Wondering what’s happening today on Bedford Ave during “Williamsburg Walks?” In addition to claiming the streets for pure pedestrian enjoyment, here’s a schedule of activities and names of organizations who will be present.
BLOCK BY BLOCK
N8th – N9th Southside CSA Block — Seasonal Spring Eating
Southside CSA, a grassroots group that supports getting produce and products from local fields to Brooklyn kitchens, is sponsoring a block at Williamsburg Walks dedicated to food activism and activities. For all workshops, discussions, and events, some seating will be available, but we encourage you to bring your own beach chairs for guaranteed comfort!
1 – 6pm Urban Gardening Activities
It’s not too late to get your own garden (backyard, container, street plot, etc) started. Come and get some inspiration from local gardeners and discuss the various ways New Yorkers can get their thumbs green. Don’t have any space in your nyc apartment for gardening, join the fun by making seed bombs at our neighborhood greening station and help turn our neighborhood’s empty lots into wildflower fields.
1 – 6 pm Eating Local Activities
Strawberries are a Springtime gem that will only be around for a few more weeks. We will be dishing sweet and savory strawberry recipes and whipping up a few of our favorites and discussing various ways to put up berries for some continued wintertime enjoyment. (And if you’re lucky we will have some rhubarb rocking too.)
6pm – Cooking contest. Spring Salad.
Bring on your best seasonal salad. Rules. Homemade. Local ingredients. (exceptions for oils and spices). Entries accepted from 6 to 630pm. Jury will announce winner at 7pm
7pm – Sunset Picnic BYOE (Bring your own everything)
Join us in the streets…for an old fashioned picnic. It may sound crazy to plop down a picnic blanket on a street in a dense urban city but we can’t think of a better way to celebrate Brooklyn’s local harvest. Brooklynites create so many amazing things in their kitchens, gardens, basements, and roofs…we can only imagine what you can pull together for a picnic. Gather some food from your house, grab a blanket, and let’s grub together while the sun goes down and the night lights go on. Musical entertainment provided for your dining pleasure. (P.S. if you dont have time to prepare a meal, no sweat, Bedford Ave & the Northside are filled with many amazing dining choices and take-out options.)
N7th – N8th NAG Civic Block
Meet the organizations that contribute to make your neighborhood a better place: Neighbors Allied for Good Growth (NAG), The North Side Town Hall, People’s Firehouse Inc, Open Space Alliance (OSA), Time’s Up, Empty Cages Collective, Community Energy, Transportation Alternatives (TA) and Build it Green.
2pm – Biking Rules! – The Transportation Alternatives Brooklyn Committee and NAG present a safety overview for new cyclists and those who want to brush up on safe riding. Followed by a group ride featuring cool community spaces!
4pm – Where’s My Park? Bike Tour – Explore the neighborhood’s not-parks! A guided tour of the City’s unfulfilled promises.
