I just spoke with Andrew Zobler from GFI Capital, the newest owner of the infamous Finger Building at 144 N 8th St (between Bedford and Berry). Zobler confirmed to me that the building will remain at its current 110 feet height (10 stories). GFI Capital wishes to improve community relations and decided not to build to the full 220 feet allowed by the BSA (Board of Standard and Appeals), he says. As noted in the Daily News, the building will now be called “The Albero”—Italian for tree. This is welcome news for Stop Our Supersizing (SOS), a group of dedicated Williamsburg activists who fought a long and expensive legal battle. I wish the new developers good luck (as long as they don’t change their minds!).
