A striking custom-frame motorcycle that once belonged to the legend Indian Larry gleams in the window of Genuine Motors—a new biker apparel shop housed in a corner of a block long factory on Berry and North 14th Street. According to the store’s owner Elisa Seeger, Genuine Motorworks is a tribute to all that is American. A place where those who yearn for the quintessential American lifestyle of the 40’s and 50s can purchase “everyday blue collar jeans and workpants”—those true-blue American brands like Levi’s, Wrangler, Dickie’s Workwear and of course, Indian Larry. In her pre-motorcycle days, Seeger was a buyer for Burlington Coat Factory, but these days she focuses on brands that are made in the USA “as much as possible,” explaining that as factories in the United States are disappearing due to the recession and outsourcing, her goal is to give ”a little back to the community and to the country.”
Each month, Genuine Motorworks celebrates a different artist (mostly local) as part of their window display. This month it is Indian Larry, who designed and built custom motorcycles. His pictures adorn the white showcase area and a tribute biography is proudly displayed on a little table along with other memorabilia. The store also features customizable merchandise from local artists based in the USA.
