I have been meaning to stop by Bedford Ave’s Amarcord Vintage for some time now. Given the Snowperbole that befell the Eastern Seaboard—as well as the fact that Amarcord is running a half-off special on snow boots, I figured it was high time to brave the ever-temperamental G train and head over.
What immediately caught my eye were these mukluks. Hitting about calf length on my 5’9 frame, both pair (normally retailing for $125; currently $62.50 during the sale) offer a plush mode of warmth for these slush-ridden days—and with a look more unique than Sorels and much more practical than the Aussie surfer slippers—my favorite-NOT, Uggs.
Yet in due course, warmer times shall return. Helping spring March on in is this 1950s New Look ensemble put together by Amarcord sales assistant Alison. On top is an Amarcord house-label black cropped leather jacket, retailing for $225. Made of re-purposed Italian leather, the asymmetrical side zipper lends a punky edge to the jacket’s overall “Rebel Without a Cause” flair. Peeking out from under the classic piece is this Balenciaga-inspired bubble-hemmed dress; for all of you out there in interwebs land, hidden from view is the frock’s collar, consisting of a stretchy tube-top taking you through summer. Then again the jacket will keep you toasty through autumn, so on and so forth. The silver shoulder bag gives an extra pop of gleam and pulls it all together. The dress goes for $175; the purse for $50.
Amarcord, right here in our fair ‘Burg, has served as style consultant for movies and theatrical productions. Impressive indeed. But, as faithful readers of my blog may recall, I’m quite thrilled about the 1990s’ 1.5-month-old status of joining the vintage fashion ranks.
Alison herself was clad in something straight out of my circa-1995 wardrobe. Her black lace-up calf-length boots, black stocking cap and Sonic Youth shirt pretty much is the exact outfit in which I would sneak out as a teen and boogie to the Chemical Brothers. True, the shirt is Marc Jacobs 2008 and Alison wasn’t sporting dog tags, yet my 90s redux theory still stands. Ah, I feel a sudden urge to listen to Veruca Salt.
