The women in our photographic essay are metal fabricators in the spaces where they engage daily in the physically demanding activity of forging and welding metals.
The many objects they produce include gates, furniture, elements of interiors for restaurants including local establishments, and also their own sculptures. We had the opportunity to capture their images in the fiery and mysterious environments they work in.
Artist’s Statement: When The WG News + Arts assigned me to do a photo essay on female metalworkers, I expected little sunlight, small spaces, and subjects uncomfortable with being in front of the camera. To my surprise, I discovered something entirely different: thousands of square feet of working space, complex lighting, and strong, confident women willing to work with me to create images representative of their dedication and beautiful work.
