OperaOggiNY Presents Memorial Performance w/ Hrabina Sunday

April 16, 2010 By WG News + Arts Leave a Comment

Greenpoint as everyone knows is home to a large Polish community. The recent untimely death of the Polish President Lech Kaczynski and dozens of other high-ranking Polish officials in a plane crash, last week, has put the Polish community in a tailspin. This terribly unfortunate event, strangely coincides with the week of the premiere of a rarely performed Polish opera Hrabina (first time in the States) by the local opera company OperaOggiNY. The opera which had been scheduled at two Greenpoint venues will only be performed at the Warsaw, this Sunday, April 18th. The other venue, the Polish Slavic Center which had scheduled the performance for April 16th, cancelled this and all activities of the week, to observe a week of mourning for those who died, according to a spokesperson at the Polish Slavic Center.

“In response to the recent events, we have decided to turn the one performance on Sunday April 18th at 5pm at the Warsaw into a memorial for all those who died a few days ago,” said Will Carter, press representative for OperaOggiNY.  There will also be a rehearsal on Friday, April 16th at the Warsaw, to which the public is welcome, said OperaOggiNY’s executive director Thomas Lawrence Toscano.  (Tickets are available at the door, $20).

“It is quite astonishing to us that we are thrust into this situation and have our opera ready at hand, scheduled to perform. Of course, we would rather do two performances, however, history is quite bigger than we are. We are privileged to add our voices and efforts and this opera (in rehearsal locally since January) to help our community deal with this tragedy and also, to honor all those involved.”

Aerial Theatre AHOYA—Sky Box Student Show

AHOYA, an aerial show performed by Sky Box, NYC, a group of 30 students and their teacher, was an ambitious and at times impressive visual spectacle. The show which played for three nights, this past week, at House of Yes in East Williamsburg, was choreographed, directed and written by Jordan Baker, founder of Sky Box, the only aerial theatre group in NY. The performers ranged in skill level but all were more than competent. They’d have to be, to climb 25 ft into the air, and perform physical feats with only a swath of silk. I learned that one performer has a corporate day job and aerialism is his hobby.  Hmmm, aerialism for de-stressing!?

_DSC8229Tying the various performances together was a story line about a plane carrying a starlet and her overworked assistant which crashes onto a jungle island filled with wild animals and unfriendly natives, a very cute dinosaur on stilts, and a starlet-charming gorilla—a kind of King Kong of thirties-era adventure movies. The costumes and makeup were wonderful, and lent the event a high production value, and for the price of a $20, it wasn’t cheap.  Sets were minimal with the exception of a funny silver lame soft-sculpture plane that comes swinging onto the stage, much like the chandelier in the Broadway musical The Phantom of the Opera. But with aerialism, the colorful swaths of silk from which the performers hang, create the main visual focus. The lighting at times wasn’t the best, leaving the upper reaches of the space unlit and performers in the dark. There were two live drummers, accompanying mostly recorded pop hits, which was total audio upbeat.
