From London to the ‘Burg … Impressions of a Shopaholic

June 27, 2010 By Mariella Agapiou Leave a Comment

Screen shot 2010-06-27 at 11.50.34 AMThere is a shopaholic deep down in all of us. It is just that some are more equipped to hold back, and save the much needed dollar. I, however, am not one of them. My days off in London Town are spent browsing my regular haunts, be it my favourite second-hand bookstore in Notting Hill, vintage fashion and jewels in Camden or Carnaby St, and Oxford St for when I feel like brainless shopping. So of course I have been screening the stores here in Williamsburg.

Bedford Ave has many a store. Many of them for clothes; vintage, boutique and franchise, oh my! Stalls are set up on the streets that sell books, jewellery and even a shoe or two. But if you walk down the road, I suggest that you turn down North 9th St and peek into Brooklyn Charm, a quaint jewellery store with a difference. When you walk in, instead of being bombarded with their own designs, you are the creator yourself. They have many Screen shot 2010-06-27 at 12.24.57 PMdifferent kinds of chains for bracelets and necklaces, gold, bronze and silver, with big or small links, and depending on the length they range from $6 to $10. Once you choose the one that you like, just browse around and be in awe of the many decorative objects; the typical and expected mixed with the vintage and rare. The charms and amulets and crafty ornaments are priced from a buck to $15. There are baubles for all tastes and quickly I was watching the amiable store girl make my bracelet in front of me. The process depends on your design and you can be particular in placement so the finished piece is exactly what you want.

Brooklyn Charm owner Tracie Howarth whose been making and selling jewellery for over 13 years, says she was inspired by the mix of vintage jewellery and customizing—the two passions came together for her; and she says: “I’ve come to learn that the more customized a piece of jewellery is, the happier the customer is.”

Homemade: Brooklyn — Totally

June 25, 2010 By Anne Szustek Leave a Comment

Food Network fans are familiar with the sodium fiesta/Upper Midwest Lutheran church fusion cuisine which is the style of semi-homemade cooking by Food Network star Sandra Lee. New York political wonks also know that the condensed-soup aficionada is possibly the next first lady of the Empire State by way of her long-term relationship with state Attorney General and Democratic gubernatorial nominee Andrew Cuomo. Apparently to his mother’s dismay, the politico’s favorite dish is Sandra Lee’s tomato soup and cottage cheese lasagna.

But in the northern end of Kings County we can look beyond the pantry for nourishment. Enter Homemade: Brooklyn, a free pop-up festival celebrating local crafts, food, design and all-around artistry. It kicks off tonight and lasts through Sunday.

Local vendors setting up shop include the in-house line of Graham Ave indie boutique/vintage shop treehouseNYC, Williamsburg designer Fay Andrada, the mind behind these swingin’ London-inspired earrings.

From London to the ‘Burg … Big Laughs, Big Drinks, Big Impressions

June 25, 2010 By Mariella Agapiou Leave a Comment

london to the burgSo it’s all getting serious, when it comes to the World Cup. I’m no expert in football (sorry soccer), but I do know some good places in which to watch, chill and be merry while a game is on. My favourite place to watch a game, except my bed, has to be Nita Nita on Wythe Ave. They have a huge projector and comfortable seats. The afternoon games are perfect here as it doesn’t get too rowdy although on a Saturday the pub is brimming with fanatics, whatever the nationality. While the games on, I suggest trying their tapas; they have a great range of snacks such as a cheese board, humus and pita and also salad. The drinks are reasonably priced with a selection of drafts, cocktails and wine. I am in favour of the Belgian White, which is only $3! A pub isn’t a pub without a beer garden and Nita Nita has one that matches the atmosphere of the place inside, so even if you’re not into the game, have a bevy outside and enjoy the sun.

Another great pub I’ve found in Williamsburg is the Cameo Gallery. Located in hipster-ville; North 6th Street, it is a brilliant place to watch bands, have a few drinks, eat, and my personal new favourite laugh out loud. In the back the Cameo Gallery plays host to Big Terrific each Wednesday. A free stand-up comedy event that had me creasing the whole night through. The night is hosted by Max Silvestri, Gabe Liedman and Jenny Slate and a bunch of hilarious guests, so funny you forget that there is no AC and it’s hot. What more do you want on a Wednesday night in Brooklyn than beer, friends and a bunch of comedians firing one-liners, comical musical styling’s and well geared jokes at you. I will sure be going back, ready to laugh until my side hurts.

Dubspot in Meat Packing District

June 25, 2010 By admin Leave a Comment

PrayingPhoto & story by Luisa Caldwell

Williamsburg resident John Englemann, whose stage name is a mythical date—”March Thirty Seventh”—played Electronica music in the Dubspot line-up in the Meat packing District this past week during the Make Music NY events. I went to watch him perform and also enjoyed several other Make Music locations on the way. It was a hot beautiful summer afternoon, his computerized sounds livened up with tambourine and vocals of strange sounds, and even dramatic body work made me want to dance, and also to find out a little more…

I asked John about his music on the computer:
