Light is in Lars Dahlhaus’ blood. As the owner of Light Up Brooklyn, Dahlhaus represents the next generation in his family’s long love affair with designing and selling light fixtures. His father owns a high-end traditional lighting company eponymously named Dahlhaus back in his native Germany, and little Lars spent many hours watching his father at work and dreaming about taking up the family trade.

“I grew up in the business,” he says. “Because of my father, I’ve been looking forward to having a retail store my whole life.”

This amazing space has only been open a few weeks so expect new things every time you visit. The front of the store features a showroom of wearable, useable, playable art pieces by Beth Goldowitz and Sharon (Sascha) Ascher, joined by John-Michael’s fashion. Beth primarily works in felt: installations, rugs, furniture upholstery, bags, whimsical dolls in the shapes of animals, Humpty Dumpty, goddesses, aliens, soaps with felted wool covers, and intricate bead work jewelry and purses. Sascha’s work involves taking natural elements like leaves and flowers and fusing them with fabric to create sliding panels for space dividers that allow light to flow. Fabrics are also stenciled, dyed, and silkscreened, and turned into panels or pillows, or fused with glass to create tabletops, walls, installations, or smaller display pieces. The ladies of Greenpoint View also provide interior design and consulting for business, institutions, and homes, especially children’s spaces (felt is great for kids’ spaces.)

Loft Law Passes Both Houses of Legislature

New Loft Law Passes Senate, Awaits Governor

The long embattled Loft law, this week was passed in both houses of the legislature. The next step is approval by the Governor. This legislation will extend Loft Law protections to approximately 300 buildings, or about 3600 additional units that were converted after 1987 for residential purposes. These units are primarily in Brooklyn and lower Manhattan. This legislation protects tenants who lived in a loft for at least 12 consecutive months between the dates of January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2009.

The Loft Law was originally enacted in 1982 following an increase in the number of non-residential buildings that were being converted wholly or partially to residential use.  These buildings all lacked compliance with laws governing zoning, housing maintenance, health, safety and fire protection standards applicable to residential occupants. Tenants were also subject to arbitrary evictions and unfair rent increases.
