Milksop—Queer Dance @ Union Pool

July 19, 2010 By Thomas Wilk Leave a Comment

4772760316_fed7905040_bIf Pride Month exhausted your desire to watch gym bunnies dress like pirates in their underwear, you may have ended up at the Milksop party at Union Pool in Williamsburg. Despite the name, there are both muscled dudes, and waifish dudes, jumping to campy Pointer Sisters anthems and then eating tacos out in the Union Pool courtyard. At this Pride event, I counted zero fellas in SKYY Vodka man-kinis, and theGaydar.net float was absent. Politicians known for promoting Pride, like David Paterson or Marty Markowitz, were not in attendance, and American’s newest gay celeb, Constance McMillen, the Mississippi teen lesbian bowdlerized by the prom wasn’t there either. Instead, the only politician there was Queen of Disco Donna Summer, in spirit, and the only platforms came from Saks Fifth Avenue.

Milksop occurs roughly tri-monthly and folks of all orientations show up to shake it. The crowd is a peculiar mix of “Williamburg now” with Annie Hall hats and homemade tanktops to Manhattan bears who have come out of their caves to see what Brooklyn has to offer. On top of it all, Union Pool is separated into three distinct spaces, and one only wonders if the bro dudes imbibing hard whiskey in the front know that it’s Brooklyn’s biggest gay dance party in the back room.

I caught up with the party promoters subjected them to intense questioning:

3rd Ward Pig Roast, Sunday

July 17, 2010 By WG News + Arts Leave a Comment

You draw, you build, you design…and 3rd Ward knows you also EAT! This Sun, July 18, 3rd Ward wants you to PIG OUT at their beloved 195 Morgan location, 2 to 9pm.

Chef Alex McCrery of Goods is making this year’s porky goodness better than ever. They’ve got two Hampshire-breed pigs from The Meat Hook brining as they speak. “We’ll spit-roast them in our courtyard for 21 hours, and serve them up in three different mouth-watering dishes: a pulled pork sandwich with slaw, pork gumbo, and a pork belly salad. We’ll also be serving up beer and bike-blended cocktails from the Band of Bicycles.” Everything’s $6 or less!

Plus, dance into the night with live performances from The Fieros, Le Mood, In Cadeo, The Ramblers, Cletus & the Barnburners, DJ Drew Heffron, and DJ Matt Taplinger. Their education department will also be on hand with interactive demos in woodworking, photography, and—yes—even urban chicken-rearing.

The North Brooklyn Compost Project Potluck Picnic Social

July 17, 2010 By WG News + Arts Leave a Comment

This Sunday, JULY 18, Potluck Picnic Social!

Break out those deviled eggs, potato salads, pies, ice cream and lemonades!  Starting at noon, they will be gathering in McCarren Park in the leafy area along Driggs Avenue (across the street from the dog run and compost site). It is a potluck affair so bring a dish/cold beverage to share. This will be a casual get-to-know your fellow composters event, and is totally and absolutely open to non-NBCPers, so bring  friends, families, and foes. Ball games, Frisbees, bocce, horseshoes, guitars and banjos, and anything else that’s playable should come with you, too.

From London to the ‘Burg … One Time Use

July 16, 2010 By Mariella Agapiou Leave a Comment

MZ_00020001-520x342The concept of disposable things (unless it’s plastic plates and cutlery) is lost on me. Recycling and reusing have become everyday commodities, and that even applies to our technology. We want something dependable that we can use again and again, even if it costs us a little bit more.  The proliferation of inexpensive and hi-tech cameras out there has meant that everyone has forgotten about their disposable cousin and it has also paved the way for an influx of amateur photographers, so when I heard that six photographers were involved in a project using disposable cameras, I was interested to see what they were doing.

One Time Use now showing at K&K Gallery on Broadway in Williamsburg, brings the act of photography back to its roots, by scaling back from modern cameras that for all intents and purposes, take themselves; they leave the image, its focus behind and evidently brings it to the foreground.

The disposable cameras used in the project where all medium exposure, low-resolution and especially un-technical with the photos developed containing grain, haze and distortion.
