The Ugliest Woman in the World @ The Brick

May 23, 2013 By WG News + Arts Leave a Comment

brick theatre williamsburgTHE TRUE HISTORY OF THE TRAGIC LIFE AND TRIUMPHANT DEATH OF JULIA PASTRANA, THE UGLIEST WOMAN IN THE WORLD

Performed entirely in the dark, Shaun Prendergast’s haunting play tells the entirely true story of sideshow freak Julia Pastrana, often billed as “The Ugliest Woman in the World.” A cast of 6 transforms The Brick into a travelling carnival, providing the sounds and smells (but not the sights!) of this tragic tale of the misshapen Mexican woman who died at 26 and was mummified by her manager/husband who continued to tour her dead body around the world. This tragic tale made the news in February 2013 when, inspired by a Texas production of this very play, advocates arranged for her body to be put to rest, over 150 years after her death.

Definitely not a radio play, this production is directed by Gyda Arber (Red Cloud Rising, Theater of the Arcade, Suspicious Package) and features a retro low-fi original score by Steve Sabaugh.

A Seasick Mama Heads for the Turnstiles

[portfolio_slideshow id=23956]Seasick Mama performs Friday, May 24th at Glasslands Gallery

I met up with 27-year-old Marial Maher, better known as Seasick Mama, to talk about her debut EP Dead Like Money, a few days before her upcoming gig at Glasslands Gallery in Williamsburg. We sat down at Variety Cafe on Graham Avenue to get her take on Brooklyn, music, and her life as an artist.

Marial, a visual arts grad, told me about how she spent her Cinco de Mayo birthday in the Dominican Republic, shooting a music video. “I thought doing this music video was going to be a small production, maybe me and four more people. But I showed up and was like: holy shit! There were about fifty people on the team, all there to work for me. I was blown away.”

OP/ED: Domino’s Greek Tragedy: Asbestos and Greed

If the NY Insulation workers in hazmat garb on the Domino complex in the infamous early April video were indeed performing asbestos removal, they certainly weren’t following industry or NYS/NYC protocol to protect public health. This hazmat removal method could represent gross negligence because voluminous quantities of dust were stirred up in an open air area caused by the ripping and sledge hammering of possible carcinogenic laden material, essentially a dirty bomb rooftop party. If the removal of alleged hazmat occurred in broad daylight on a rooftop, just imagine what is being done indoors out of public view and in the executive suite.

Asbestos, a Greek word meaning “inextinguishable,” has been used as building material since the Holy Roman Empire because of its heat and fire resistant properties. Its peak use in the US was between 1930 and 1970. According to the US Geological Survey the US continues to legally import asbestos annually primarily from Brazil, the third largest asbestos producer in the world. From January to July 2012, over 1,000 metric tons were imported. Interestingly, the US stopped producing asbestos domestically since 2002.
