“When you die, and then open your eyes, if there isn’t music, something like this playing in the distance, you’re probably on your way to the wrong place.”
In old British legend, if you can hear the sound of the bluebell’s knoll, then death is upon you. Those of us who are still alive may gather on Wythe Avenue at Output’s Panther Room on Sunday, September 8, for the
Classic Album Sunday play of The Cocteau Twins’ 1988 pressing of Bluebell Knoll.
“Classic Album Sundays” is a gathering for rock and roll audiophiles, music history lovers, and vinyl purists. The formula is fairly uniform across the board. Participants meet at the host club, bar, or lounge on the first Sunday of each month. Lights are low, conversation is null, and the immaculate vinyl of the artist/album of the month spins on a requisite super duper sound system.
Note: the system at the Panther Room includes the vaunted Funktion-One Loudspeakers, and the Output Club’s system* is touted as one of the best in the U.S.
This month’s press for the Cocteau Twins from the organization that gets these shindigs together: “This September, CAS is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the release of one of the most significant Cocteau Twins’ albums ‘Blue Bell Knoll’ with sessions in London and New York City. Often regarded by the band as their first real album, ‘Blue Bell Knoll’ was released after a two year hiatus emerging with a denser, more sophisticated sound.”
“Join us to first listen to music that either inspired or was relevant to this LP such as The Cure, Kate Bush and Harold Budd followed by the story and contemporary relevance of the album. Then the lights go down, the volume goes up and we play the album from beginning to end on vinyl on our audiophile hi-fi. Listening guidelines apply.”
