Trash helped shape the contours of his life, contributing to the occurrence of significant events. For most, garbage isn’t considered a blessing. But the designer known as GGrippo has long understood a fundamental truth: Treasure can be unearthed in the junkiest of spots. “I’ve been a compulsive trash collector since I can remember,” he attests. “Growing up in Argentina, I learned about the importance of using and reusing.”

A Williamsburg fixture since 1997, GGrippo is now a vocal proponent of up-cycling, the act of repurposing garments, accessories, and goods for a second life. The bottom floor of his eco-friendly shop, GGrippo Art + Design, stocks recycled rubber purses from Cyclus and messenger bags made by Freitag out of reconstituted truck tarps.

Swinging Sixties Center on Ainslie Street has new landlord who is evicting longtime daycare center and a senior center.

Reported by Greg Hanlon, St. Nicks Alliance
Unfortunately, no building owner is unaffected by the lure of maximizing their investment in the current housing market gripped by gentrification—even 211 Ainslie Street, the longtime home of the Swinging Sixties Senior Center and Small World Daycare, two long-running, popular centers for Williamsburg’s low and moderate-income population.

It is also where Community Board #1 meetings have been held for the last 30 years.

Elves are magical creatures found in Santa’s workshop. What we like and admire most about them is that they work hard, love what they do, and have an incredible talent for making toys.

But where do they come from?

Friends, Brooklynites, Lend Me Your Books: Mellow Pages’ new book empire

There’s something about Mellow Pages that’s just a little hard to wrap around your head. On its face, it’s a pretty simple endeavor: two guys took a studio space in Bushwick and put a few books up on the wall. Before they knew it, more and more books were added based on a “ten book loan” membership model. For the price of that loan, members are welcome to use the space to sit quietly and read or work. Add a few reading events, and writing workshops at night, and you’ve got Mellow Pages: a free-of-cost reading room/creative space in Bushwick. The thing of it is, places like Mellow Pages usually just don’t exist in New York City, in a place where people pay and pay for the privilege of being near culture, culture that rarely comes completely devoid of a price. You can look as hard as you want for the hidden price of entry to Mellow Pages, but you won’t find it.

“We like to promote non capitalistically the stuff we enjoy.”
