A.G. Schneiderman and DEC Commissioner Martens have announced $395K in the first round of grants from Greenpoint Community Environmental Fund (GCEF), which was created from $19.5M paid By ExxonMobil in settlement with the State of New York over the Greenpoint oil spill.

The group announced funding for 18 small-grant projects yesterday.

Taking the lion’s share of the total are the New York City Audubon Society, and the North Brooklyn Boat Club, receiving $74,865 and $73,779, respectively. The Audubon Society will create an Urban Oasis in McGolrick Park, and will implement the “For the Birds!” environmental education programs at the Monitor School (PS 110), and at St.Stanislaus Kosta Catholic Academy.

The North Brooklyn Boat Club (NBBC) will expand their current waterways environmental education programs, including the program at the ED Shed, and will create the “Don’t Put Your Butt in the Creek” program to end the problem of cigarette butts deposited into the Newtown Creek.

The Newtown Creek Alliance was awarded two grants to fund their North Henry Street Project and to build a biological “living dock.”

The Greenpoint Reformed Church will receive $5,000 (and contribute $1,000 in matching funds) to determine the feasibility of installing a green roof on the church, located at 136 Milton Street. Green roofs provide a number of environmental benefits, including reducing storm water runoff, and related air pollution. An engineering study will be conducted to determine the strength and durability of the 2,500 square foot roof, originally constructed in 1848.

$400K in Environmental Grants Awarded Through Greenpoint Oil Spill Fund

The Greenpoint Community Environmental Fund is a $19.5 million grant program created by the State of New York with monies obtained through a settlement with ExxonMobil over its Greenpoint oil spill. The GCEF’s goal is to fund projects that will address the Greenpoint community’s environmental priorities through a process that is open, transparent, and ensures ongoing engagement and partnership with the community.
