Mable’s Smokehouse, Free, starts at 2pm:
Mable’s Smokehouse on Berry Street may be a three-year-old foal, but it leads the field when it comes to Southern food — one of the owners is even from Louisville. The party starts at 2 pm, and will include juleps and derby pie.
Pull on your best approximation of Derby duds, sport a chapeau like Johnny Weir, or not—but do get yourself to one of these joints to cheer on your favorite (we choose by our favorite name, natch) and fill your feedbag with mint juleps and derby pie. Post time is 6:24 pm, festivities start much earlier, ya’ll.
Pete’s Candy Store throws their annual free Kentucky Derby party, free, from 3-7pm.
Whether you’re rooting for California Chrome, Wicked Strong, or We Miss Artie, Pete’s Candy Store is an odds-on favorite to serve up a good time. You can learn something new from Pete’s Paddock, enter the Idiot Stakes, or partake in the ladies millinery competition, which rewards the best-hatted with a beer tab. Mint juleps are the libation of the day; bourbon-glazed ribs, Louisville potato salad, and Derby Pie make up the blue-plate special. It may not be Churchill Downs, but after a few of Pete’s mint juleps, you won’t even notice.
Kent Ale House Free, starts at 2pm:
Well, horse racing is a sport after all, and Kent Ale House is, seriously, a sports bar. “With 11 flatscreen TVs, 24 craft beers on tap, and a full menu, Kent Ale House is the number one sports bar in Williamsburg to spend the day.”
$5 Mint Juleps & Bourbon Lemonades all day, $100 gift voucher for Best Derby Attire, Happy Hour from 3-7pm.
