Established in 2014 by a collective of film enthusiasts working in the entertainment industry, Filmbeats is a mobile movie series for the music lover. Its premiere screening, “Detonator,” will be held on Sunday, June 29th at 7:00pm, followed by a DJ set with music from, and inspired by, the movie at The Picture Show.
A tribal gathering of movie mavericks, electronic music muses, soundtrack visionaries rock & roll storytellers, Filmbeats’ mission is to celebrate seminal films by highlighting often overlooked soundtracks.
“Detonator” focuses on a former front man of a well-respected punk band, taking place in and around the hardcore scene with music to match. The soundtrack boasts original music contributed by Joe Jack Talcum of the Dead Milkmen and local musicians DINGUS.
Set in Philadelphia, “Detonator,” a film by Damon Maulucci and Keir Politz, follows Sully as he tries to acclimate to his familial obligations while confronted by an ex-band mate from his punk rock past. The film explores the inherent tensions that arise when letting go of the ideals of rebellious youth and the pressures of conforming to the norms of society in adulthood. The film spans a climactic night supported by a cast made up of America’s new wave of indie darlings, including Lawrence Michael Levine, Benjamin Ellis Fine, Sophia Takal and Joe Swanberg.
Following the post-film discussion with co-director Damon Maulucci and actors Lawrence Michael Levine and Benjamin Ellis Fine, attendees will be treated to a punk themed listening party sampling music from the Dead Milkmen, Black Flag, Dead Kennedy’s and more.
