In April 2012, the WG ran a story about local manufacturer/inventor Eric Mingrino, “Machine Man: Manufacturing Superhero in Greenpoint.”
We’d like to update the story, to showcase Mingrino’s latest invention, a device that addresses the increasing and unnecessarily high incidences of accidental injuries in gyms across the United States related to the sport of weight lifting.
According to US Consumer Product Safety Commission, it is a very serious issue; in the last decade millions of Americans have been admitted to emergency rooms with weight-lifting related injuries, and will only increase in severity, as the popularity of the sport continues to rise, says Mingrino.
Greenpoint inventor Migrino’s solution is the “SpotterAssist,” and billed as “The Next Generation Computerized Safety System.”
A study by the Fitness Products Council and Sporting Goods Manufacturers, reports that the number of people lifting free weights has increased 76% in the past decade, and that weight lifting is among the most popular sports in North America today.
This new machine, says Mingrino, can positively impact activities in schools, hotels, the military, football, and baseball teams; to say nothing of individual power lifters, pro weight lifters, and body builders. “Weight lifting is a safe enough activity when practiced in pairs, but when lifters practice alone in their home gyms, accidents, unfortunately, are very common, resulting in serious injuries, and even resulting in deaths.”
The stats according to Mingrino are staggering; he reports, there were reportedly 60,000 accidents in 2012, worldwide, due to this sport alone.
