Living Los Sures preview screening tonight, 8pm @ Sternberg park in East Williamsburg. Party, music and more projects afterward at UnionDocs.
In the late seventies and early eighties, South Williamsburg was one of the poorest neighborhoods in New York City. It was troubled by drugs and violence, full of abandoned real estate, and badly under-served. Los Sures, a documentary from 1984 by Diego Echeverria, skillfully represents the challenges of this time, while also celebrating a community that was connected, coherent and full of culture.
This is the weekend for Figment! Figment is a free, weekend-long, annual interactive art event on NYC’s Governors Island. For one weekend each summer, Governors Island is transformed into a large-scale collaborative artwork – and then it’s gone.
Put aside some time on Saturday and Sunday and enjoy the mini golf course, treehouse, pavilion, and sculpture on Governors Island; the festival leads into an all summer long event.
Tonight is the opening reception for suggestion, that is the dream: Arshile Gorky and a selection of contemporary drawings at Outlet Fine Art from 7-10pm.
“To name an object is to suppress three-quarters of the enjoyment,” wrote the poet Mallarmé, “…suggestion, that is the dream.” Mallarmé’s statement, although originally conceived as literary concept, was quickly adopted by a younger generation of artists and musicians who were similarly rejecting the conventions of Naturalism. Mallarmé’s concept inspired a new way of seeing and interpreting art and launched the Symbolism movement in the late 19th Century.
