Still from “Corridas de Alegría” (1982)

There are some artists who never bridge the Atlantic divide, or do so later in their careers, if not posthumously. Friend, and former Williamsburg dancer, Mariola Rey, introduces a Spaniard who may be on his way to doing so in the twilight of his career. Meet Gonzalo García-Pelayo, a music producer, a movie producer, a man who has been both celebrated and reviled in his own country for his irreverence and dark themes. —Editor

Gonzalo Garcia-Pelayo, now in his late sixties, is especially recognized in Europe for penning and directing Alegrías de Cádiz (2013), Vivir en Sevilla (1978), and Manuela (1976). Among the hundreds of records he produced, he is widely known for producing a flamenco-blues band called Triana in 1970s Spain.

appropriate behavior sundance

Shirin is struggling to become an ideal Persian daughter, politically correct bisexual and hip young Brooklynite but fails miserably in her attempt at all identities. Being without a cliché to hold onto can be a lonely experience.

We first encounter Shirin–the inappropriate, young, bi-sexual Iranian-American protagonist of Appropriate Behavior–casually walking down a Brooklyn street with a strap-on dildo dangling from her hand. When her first real girlfriend and love, Maxine, breaks up with her, Shirin is forced to candidly reevaluate her entire life, navigate her feelings of abandonment, communicate to her loving yet traditional Persian parents that she likes girls too, and deal with the fact that her brother is marrying a perfect parentally-approved Iranian prize catch.

A youthful troupe of Buenos Aires actors mingle their tangled personal lives with their performances of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night in this witty, seductive, urban comedy. “A triumph of narrative imagination and bottom-line ingenuity…” – Manohla Dargis, The New York Times.

VIOLA will be preceded by the Warner Bros. cartoon, “A Ham in a Role.”

Naomi Shelton & the Gospel Queens at Rough Trade NYC, 7/29, free!

July 29, 2014 By WG News + Arts Leave a Comment

naomi shelton gospel recordCold World by Naomi Sheton & the Gospel Queens drops today; from their label, Daptone Records:

“With Gabriel (Bosco Mann) Roth at the helm, Naomi and company went into the studio Summer 2013, and cut onto tape what can only be described as bonafide Soul Excitement of the highest order! At the heart of it, Cold World is a Soul record but the cross section of sub-genres the album weaves through makes it difficult to label it plainly as such.”

In the six years since the release of their last full-length record, Naomi Shelton & the Gospel Queens have toured extensively, playing main stages at some of the most prestigious festivals in the world, including Bonnaroo, The Monterey Jazz Festival, Montreal Pop, and The Ottawa Blues Festival. Though seasoned veterans, these last years of touring played a crucial role in the creation of the songs that would become the forthcoming album Cold World, twelve inspired new songs cut live to eight-track tape.
