Frog Eyes, P.S. I Love You, at Rough Trade, 8/23

August 23, 2014 By WG News + Arts Leave a Comment

frog eyes band from british columbiaAlmost a year after he was diagnosed with throat cancer, Frog Eyes’ Carey Mercer was been cleared to start performing again. Tonight’s Rough Trade show is the New York stop on the band’s celebratory tour of North America.

Shuddering, intense, grit-and-glam cabaret from Victoria, BC. Trembling, combustible rock magic – complete with a hoary growl barking lyrical turns of phrase over heavy beats, skronk, and aching beauty. The band has been turning heads wherever they go, and can count Black Dice, the Animal Collective, Wolf Parade, Mountain Goats, Hot Hot Heat, Polyphonic Spree, and John Vanderslice among their legions of diehard fans.

Kafka, to Oskar Pollak, Nov 8 1903

August 22, 2014 By WG News + Arts Leave a Comment

franz kafka

A letter from Kafka to his friend Oskar Pollak, 1903, quoted in Briefe (ed. Max Brod)

“For we are abandoned, like children lost in the wood. When you stand before me, and look at me, what do you know of the pains that are in me, and what do I know of yours? And if I were to prostate myself before you and weep and talk, would you know any more about me than you know about hell when someone tells you it is hot and fearsome? For this reason alone, we human beings should stand before one another with as much respect, as much sympathy, and as much love as if we were standing before the gates of hell.”
