She Keeps Bees’ debut album, Minisink Hotel, was described by NYC’s Other Music as “the best album you’ve never heard.” Nests, their second full-length record, was admired by the Guardian as “sparse, soulful and defiantly retro.” Their third LP, Dig On, was praised by the BBC as “an album of fire, spirit, and sweat.”

Now, Jessica Larrabee and Andy LaPlant are touring in support of their fourth album, Eight Houses, kicking it off Thursday night at Cameo Gallery. “It Is What It Is”, the first single released from the album, features vocals by Sharon Van Etten. Of Larrabee, Van Etten says “She has one of the best voices I have ever heard, and she has more soul in one finger than most female singers have in our scene.”

Summer in the City

  • This is one Brooklyn warehouse that will not be demolished. At 79 Quay Street in Brooklyn — about a block from the waterfront — Cayuga Management decided not to demolish the existing structure on the site, but will instead build townhouses formed from the warehouse.
  • In other gigantic amounts of money development news: a developer is shelling out $36 million for a warehouse in Eastern Bushwicksburg.
  • Ribbons and medals were handed out to “Brooklyn Made” winners, including Greenpoint’s specialty kitchen knives maker Hussar Metals.
  • Which children’s book character are you? Find out with this quiz from the New York Public Library.
  • Riding your bicycle could get you a $625 fine and a warrant for your arrest. Be careful out there.

MO Governor Requests National Guard in Ferguson

National Guard Arrives in Ferguson

The request for the arrival of the National Guard to Ferguson, Missouri is a savvy (albeit counter-intuitive) move by the Missouri governor to reduce unrest. Because the US government did not directly request — “federalize” — the National Guard, their deployment to Ferguson is not legally defined as deployment.

Because the black community has expressed their fury and frustration at the “disrespect” directed at them by the Ferguson police for many years, law enforcement’s continued presence, particularly in military gear and equipment, would only escalate the crisis. The National Guard is a de facto UN peacekeeping force (or should we now say “US peacekeeping force”), a neutral crowd-control mechanism whose presence placates the community to a certain degree, and relieves the pressure on local law enforcement. Additionally, the National Guard’s occupying presence is temporary, versus a permanent presence by local police. This maneuver also buys time, though not much, for review and negotiation.
