From Within the Flesh of the World @ Radiator Gallery

October 22, 2014 By WG News + Arts Leave a Comment

Screen Shot 2014-10-22 at 1.39.12 PMRecent photographs, sculptures, and videos by Adam Frelin and Rena Leinberger at Radiator Gallery.

By re-creating, displacing, and transforming seemingly familiar images, objects, sites, and actions, the artists construct distinctive narratives as well as explore the role of the mediums. With their formal qualities, these works subvert art historical conventions as well as cultural and societal expectations. The works conflate fact and fiction, past and present, and the natural and man-made environment. The title of the exhibition, From Within the Flesh of the World, is taken from Victor Burgin’s essay, “Monument and Melancholia” (2008).

Opening Reception: Saturday, Oct 25, 6-9 pm
Radiator Arts
10-61 Jackson Avenue, Long Island City
October 25 – December 13, 2014

El Museo de Los Sures and ISCP present “I use people for what I write” 10/22

October 21, 2014 By WG News + Arts Leave a Comment

i use peopleEl Museo de Los Sures and the International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) are pleased to present the exhibition “I use people for what I write” by artist and ISCP alum Itziar Barrio.

This exhibition is the outcome of Barrio’s three-month residency at El Museo, where she has initiated a series of works on desire and power. “I use people for what I write” includes cement sculptures, silkscreens on latex and video work. The notion of value is intertwined throughout the works by varying and repeating the form of a trapezoid referencing diamonds and gold ingots. Using the same materials in a second set of sculptures alongside parts of an Ikea chair, Barrio addresses concepts of mass production and popular design. Another work, “I’m a Writer,” uses printed text on latex and reconstructed phrases from the movie Basic Instinct (1992). Here, words from the film’s dialogue are removed to create a quasi-monologue.

The exhibition runs from October 22- November 19, Thursday-Saturday, 1-6pm.
