Kafka, to Oskar Pollak, Nov 8 1903
A letter from Kafka to his friend Oskar Pollak, 1903, quoted in Briefe (ed. Max Brod)
“For we are abandoned, like children lost in the wood. When you stand before me, and look at me, what do you know of the pains that are in me, and what do I know of yours? And if I were to prostate myself before you and weep and talk, would you know any more about me than you know about hell when someone tells you it is hot and fearsome? For this reason alone, we human beings should stand before one another with as much respect, as much sympathy, and as much love as if we were standing before the gates of hell.”
You Are Worthy: She Keeps Bees kicks off North American tour for “Eight Houses” at Cameo Gallery, 8/21
She Keeps Bees’ debut album, Minisink Hotel, was described by NYC’s Other Music as “the best album you’ve never heard.” Nests, their second full-length record, was admired by the Guardian as “sparse, soulful and defiantly retro.” Their third LP, Dig On, was praised by the BBC as “an album of fire, spirit, and sweat.”
Now, Jessica Larrabee and Andy LaPlant are touring in support of their fourth album, Eight Houses, kicking it off Thursday night at Cameo Gallery. “It Is What It Is”, the first single released from the album, features vocals by Sharon Van Etten. Of Larrabee, Van Etten says “She has one of the best voices I have ever heard, and she has more soul in one finger than most female singers have in our scene.”
