The Whitney Houston Biennial—I Am Every Woman

The Whitney Houston Biennial was a one-day loft-style exhibition curated by Christine Finley in DUMBO, featuring 85 women artists. It bears no affiliation with the similarly themed 2009 Whitney’s Biennial at c.r.e.a.m. That one paralleled Whitney Houston’s drug addiction with the struggles of an artist.

Strategically positioned just inside the door of the show we are immediately introduced to Christa Bell, the artist prophet who steadily recites words and euphemisms for “vagina.” She is a holy woman surrounded by beads and flowers but many of the terms are vulgar (Hair Pie, Hatchet Wound, Furry Taco), yet the neutrality in which they are spoken are embraced and non-judgmental.

The inauguration and “unveiling” of Brooklyn Finery — an evolving mural on Grand Street (at Berry) will be celebrated with a reception on Tuesday, Sept. 10 from 5:30-7:30 pm.

The artists have been hard at work for several months, in all kinds of weather. All the while, neighborhood residents and visitors have had the benefit of watching the wall progress day after day into a wonderful public work of art, rich with social and cultural references.

Greenpoint Artist will show Arab/Israeli Peace Lithograph in Prague

August 29, 2013 By WG News + Arts Leave a Comment

Greenpoint artist Noa Bornstein will show her lithograph, Ach (the word for “brother” in Arabic and Hebrew) in a group exhibition at the HOLLAR Gallery in Prague, Czech Republic in the fall (Sept. 18—October 13, 2013). Bornstein printed the limited edition on a scholarship at the Manhattan Graphics Center which co-organized the show. She has been studying Arabic at ABC Languages on 29th street in Manhattan since 2010. Having previously studied Hebrew, the striking similarities between the two languages led her to the image which incorporates the Arabic and Hebrew letters: “Eleph Che” in Arabic, and “Aleph Chet” (the ‘ch’ being the guttural ‘h’ sound) that spell, “Ach”—pronounced exactly the same in both languages. The word in English also appears.

For further information on the show itself, contact Manhattan Graphics Center
(MGC) via Eileen Zyko Wolter (eileen@manhattangraphicscenter.org) / www.noabornstein.com
