In Memoriam: Meredith Allen (1964-2011)

March 18, 2011 By WG News + Arts Leave a Comment

My heart is terribly broken today, as I’ve learned that New York artist Meredith Allen lost her battle with cancer yesterday morning. Meredith had been nothing short of heroic in how she fought the disease over the past three years; brave, human, honest, and always, through it all, kinder than anyone dealing with such pain and fear could be expected to be. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her deepest love, Carol Saft, and their families.

The North Brooklyn Compost Project Potluck Picnic Social

July 17, 2010 By WG News + Arts Leave a Comment

This Sunday, JULY 18, Potluck Picnic Social!

Break out those deviled eggs, potato salads, pies, ice cream and lemonades!  Starting at noon, they will be gathering in McCarren Park in the leafy area along Driggs Avenue (across the street from the dog run and compost site). It is a potluck affair so bring a dish/cold beverage to share. This will be a casual get-to-know your fellow composters event, and is totally and absolutely open to non-NBCPers, so bring  friends, families, and foes. Ball games, Frisbees, bocce, horseshoes, guitars and banjos, and anything else that’s playable should come with you, too.

GrandSt_poster_lores_REV2

If ceaseless online banner ads and sleigh bell-tinged television jingles haven’t made you aware already, we are indeed coming up on the last shopping weekend before Christmas. Shopping locally, you’ll find dozens of unique shops and boutiques from as far up as the North Pole (or the northernmost tip of Greenpoint). Many are offering complimentary libations, along with Christmastide cheap chic.

For the second week, The Grand Adventure highlights fabulous clothing and gift boutiques along Grand Street. Mention the phrase “Grand Adventure” for special treats and discounts.

GRAND ST / PEACHFROG / THE PARLOUR / IN GOD WE TRUST / TASK

On deck for this evening from 6-9pm is The Grand Adventure. Swing by any business on Grand St between Marcy and Kent Aves displaying paper candlelight lanterns, known as “farolitos,” for discounts, drinks and munchies. Just mention the phrase “Grand Adventure” while there to unlock the magic. It’s also going down next Friday as well. Same place, same time, same rules.

Greenpoint’s Quiet Park: McGolrick

November 22, 2009 By Melanie Weinberger Leave a Comment

mcgolrick park greenpoint brooklyn

Every time I step out of my Greenpoint apartment for a run it begins the same way—a 5-minute stroll through McGolrick Park. This park is quietly understated in the neighborhood, off the beaten path, away from the North Brooklyn fray, a gem to residents nearby. After skipping through its walkways again this morning I decided to slow down and take in some of its details.

Each far corner of the rectangular park offers a diagonal path to the center, lined with street lamps that glow orange at night. The pathways organize the shape of grassy areas and trees beyond the benches. I’ve inadvertently gotten a mean sunburn by sitting and reading a book in those grassy areas; you can lose track of time in its calm atmosphere. This is not your chaotic McCarren Park overflowing on a sunny day.
