McCarren Park Pool just might have an ice rink in it’s future. The Open Space Alliance is in discussions with the Parks Department to actualize a proposal to turn the deck area of the pool into a public ice skating rink this fall and winter. The projected opening date is sometime around Thanksgiving and will run at least until the first week of January. Read more.

The 126th Annual Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Saint Paulinus of Nola, an Italian street festival that spans 12 days in Williamsburg and is celebrated by The Shrine Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, kicked off Wednesday. The festival features live entertainment, specialty food vendors, parades, a bazaar with games, children’s rides and amusements, as well as a first-ever “Best Meatball” contest on July 15.

You definitely want to be in on the action on Sunday, July 14 for the centerpiece of the whole celebration. On “Giglio Sunday,” from 1-6pm, over 100 men hoist a 6,000 pound, 80-foot-tall steeple, and a replica of a boat, onto their backs. They proceed to dance them down Havemeyer Street in remembrance of Paolino di Nola, a saint who sacrificed himself into slavery to save the children of the town of Nola.

A leading member of Community Board 4 called it “a lot of spillover from Williamsburg.”
