Light is in Lars Dahlhaus’ blood. As the owner of Light Up Brooklyn, Dahlhaus represents the next generation in his family’s long love affair with designing and selling light fixtures. His father owns a high-end traditional lighting company eponymously named Dahlhaus back in his native Germany, and little Lars spent many hours watching his father at work and dreaming about taking up the family trade.

“I grew up in the business,” he says. “Because of my father, I’ve been looking forward to having a retail store my whole life.”

Rowan Tuckfield has the intensity of a well-caffeinated man. When the owner of Kitten Coffee, a wholesale coffee distributor and barista school, speaks about the endless quest for the perfect cuppa joe, he gets a mad scientist look in his eye.

“You can’t buy a book about roasting,” he says, gesturing emphatically with coffee-stained fingers. “It’s a black art. Scientists are still discovering new, volatile aromatics that can be brought out in the flavor.” I’m no chemist, but I get his point: Every cup of coffee is a bit of a mystery.

Main Drag Music Opens Bushwick Supply on Bushwick Ave

Bushwick Supply, the highly anticipated sister shop to the Williamsburg music emporium Main Drag, launched with a bash when it opened its doors last week.

Like Main Drag, Bushwick Supply provides musician’s supplies including guitar strings, drum heads, drumsticks, drum hardware and parts, microphones, cables, gig bags, and other staples. “There was a lack of this kind of service around there,” said John Fell, partner in the business, “and we’ve been seeing a migration of our customers out that way. So, we figured we should give it a go, too.  Many great venues and studios are also opening up around here daily.
