As NYC music aficionados know, the Knitting Factory is not a historical landmark dating back from the Industrial Revolution, but is a Williamsburg music venue featuring alt-rock greats old and new.

This weekend, playing at the Metropolitan Ave locale is the pop-up shop of Williamsburg bar/boutique Kingdom, featuring indie fashion from designers based in and out of the greater North Brooklyn area.

Brooklyn Bowl: at Local x Local Series

March 31, 2010 By Anne Szustek Leave a Comment

On Sunday, the Brooklyn Bowl hosted the German Measles and the Vivian Girls, part of their Local x Local concert series featuring great Brooklyn bands. The concert was like The Clash and The Germs all rolled into one happy little bun. So what were we wearing? My New Jersey-based suitor wondered whether jeans were acceptable attire at the Brooklyn Bowl.

Yes, jeans are more than okay to wear to a bowling alley/indie band venue in Williamsburg.

He  joins a group of Greenpointers and me already seated in the restaurant area wearing jeans, paired with boat shoes and a silk button-down shirt. I’m wearing a pair of Earnest Sewns patched up with detritus fabric thrown and picked up during Williamsburg Fashion Week, and a red SoCo shirt freebie courtesy the Brooklyn Bowl and L Magazine’s Mardi Gras event.

JoAnn Berman Electric on The Runway

February 23, 2010 By WG News + Arts Leave a Comment

The JoAnn Berman “Thunderbirds” show was a standing ovation event at The Green Shows (held at The Green House in the LES), during Fashion Week. In attendance were WWD, Vogue, Marie Claire, and Seventeen, as well as model/designer Nicole Murphy (former wife of Eddie Murphy) who had her picture taken with Ms. Berman. She used the Aretha Franklin song Rock Steady to open the show, and proved to be rock steady as model after model flew down the runway to applause. She incorporated her quasi hip hop  graffiti canvases into a montage of phantasmargorical colors and textures as if one were tripping away the night. She proves that the future of Green couture is a trick in her bag which never tires.  Pics after jump.

My Fashion Week Fabulous Escapade

February 16, 2010 By Anne Szustek Leave a Comment

fashion week brooklyn

Fashion Week. The pageantry. The lack of sleep. The excuse to paint the outline of Brooklyn over my eye as a paean to 60s mod redux style. And of course, plenty o’ opportunity to meet and reconnect with fabulous arbiters of style based in North Brooklyn.

Saturday eve’s first stop was a swing by the Chictopia Vice magazine party at the Tribeca Grand Hotel. I spotted a celeb or two, including the deejay of the evening, Erika Forster of Williamsburg’s very own dream pop trio Au Revoir Simone. The crowd was chock-a-block with headbands and winged eye makeup. ARS fandom or part of the current Roaring 20s trend? I’ll let you ponder for yourselves (me thinks it was a bit of from column A and column B). In the meantime, let your eyes feel the fashion beat from this pic from the deejay booth.

Amarcord Vintage: Foot Loose & Fancy Free

February 13, 2010 By Anne Szustek Leave a Comment

I have been meaning to stop by Bedford Ave’s Amarcord Vintage for some time now. Given the Snowperbole that befell the Eastern Seaboard—as well as the fact that Amarcord is running a half-off special on snow boots, I figured it was high time to brave the ever-temperamental G train and head over.

Muluks 1

What immediately caught my eye were these mukluks. Hitting about calf length on my 5’9 frame, both pair (normally retailing for $125; currently $62.50 during the sale) offer a plush mode of warmth for these slush-ridden days—and with a look more unique than Sorels and much more practical than the Aussie surfer slippers—my favorite-NOT, Uggs.
