Tragic, Possibly Fatal, Accident in Greenpoint

April 28, 2009 By Reid Pillifant Leave a Comment

laura2From Greenpointers, this photo and a report that earlier this afternoon, the driver of a stolen car hit a young woman on Manhattan Avenue, between India and Huron.  The Greenpoint Gazette reports that it received an e-mail tip earlier in the day of a shoot-out on Nassau Avenue.  Unclear for now how the two are related, whether a suspect is in custody, and whether the woman’s injuries were fatal. Appears she was taken to Bellevue in critical condition.  We’ll try to figure out what happened as soon as we can.  In the meantime, our thoughts go out to the woman’s family.

Tonight: Williamsburg Walks Meeting

April 27, 2009 By Michael McGregor Leave a Comment

2751374368_19fe7e4e80Tonight The L Magazine and NAG will host an informational meeting for this year’s Williamsburg Walks. As with last year, every Saturday in June and July, between the hours of noon and 9 pm, Bedford Ave will become a walker’s paradise, with street vendors, sidewalk chalk artists and on-foot pedestrians making Williamsburg’s main street feel like an extension of McCarren Park rather than a bustling boulevard.

While it seems like the event is a-go, there has been some controversy, with local business owners claiming the “street fair” actually hurts business. Looking to learn more about Williamsburg Walks or simply want to voice your opinion about the event? Head to the Williamsburg Walks Information Meeting at 7 pm tonight at the Swinging Sixties Senior Center, located at 211 Ainslie Street at Manhattan Ave.
