If you’re feeling cold, simply remember your favorite foods, and then you won’t feel so bad…

Samurai Papa

Don’t let the cold weather defeat you. Rather, seek out a Japanese-style soup with heft at the southern-most end of Graham Ave, in Williamsburg—at Samurai Papa. Enjoy Makoto Suzuki’s latest invention: Tomato vegan homemade ramen noodle soup. I did, was fortified enough to walk back to the Northside via Broadway under the JMZ. I was braced with potbelly heat to the corps, against raging 10 degrees cold.

Tenants are discovering, in new constructions in neighborhoods throughout the city, including Williamsburg and Brooklyn Heights, that they are rent stabilized, a fact kept well hidden by landlords while they collect lucrative tax abatements. CityLimits.org went to see how some tenants were faring in housing court.

It’s not quite a liquid brunch, but almost because so much of what we are enjoying is beers “exclusive small batch” and cocktails. As the clock strikes noon at The Federal Bar on Metropolitan Ave, last Sunday, we start with “Beermosas” and a “Bitter Bitch” (Campari, gin pamplemousse, and lemon) and an iced coffee with bourbon, dusted with cocoa (inventions bearing morning-after names): “Was It Good For You?”

Wash that Grey Right Into Your Hair

Cobalt Salon NYC

“Grey is requested here a lot,” says Kristen Kattenbraker, the manager, stylist and make-up artist at Cobalt Salon, a new hair salon in Williamsburg. Her own hair, grey-colored (very close to white)— sweeps stylishly across her face.

The interior at Cobalt is crisp and airy, and created with a palette of whites and blacks and highlighted with broad strokes of cobalt. The stairs in the two-story building will be cobalt soon too. Choice artwork, comfortable black leather chairs, white geometric chandeliers, track lighting, and a nod to vintage: hanging antique bulbs and the reception desk made with faux-distressed farmhouse wood, results in an inviting and cool environment.
