Bridgewalkers: The Doublemint Edition

June 18, 2009 By Stacey Brook Leave a Comment

boxing-bridgeLike leaders of a SWAT team, Edward and Ricky came barreling towards me on the bridge Monday morning around 11:20am dressed in matching black Under Armour shirts and black, double-striped workout pants.  Their faces were intense.  Their concentrations, focused.  And yet, I couldn’t help stopping them to ask, “What’s up with the twin getup?”

“We’re boxing partners,” said Edward.  Obviously.

Both originally from Bushwick, Edward (24) and Ricky (23) lived in the same neighborhood for years before they started connecting over their passion for a sport that requires intense dedication and training.  Though Ricky now lives in New Brunswick , NJ, the friends often use the Williamsburg Bridge as their bootcamp grounds, running back and forth from Manhattan to Brooklyn, conquering the structure’s steep inclines, bracing against its downhill slopes, and  zipping through its short, forgiving middle as two side by side streaks of black.

Wild End of an Era at Community Board #1

June 11, 2009 By Reid Pillifant Leave a Comment

img_0167The Vinny Abate Era officially came to a close on Tuesday night in Williamsburg, after a turbulent meeting that had to be one of the wilder ones in the chairman’s nearly 30-year tenure. The night’s agenda included the city’s controversial Broadway Triangle plan, the city’s controversial Kent Ave bike lane plan, and the closely-contested (but not as controversial) election of Abate’s successor.

The meeting began with a raucous protest, thanks to the Broadway Triangle Community Coalition, which drowned out a presentation on the city’s plan for Broadway Triangle with about 50 chanting protesters (and one small bullhorn). The BTCC would like to see 25-story buildings on a 40-acre section of land, in order to maximize the affordable housing available on the property. The city has proposed a roughly 20-acre rezoning with 8-story buildings. More on that whole story here.

After a brief lull, it was time for the Kent Ave bike lane, where the dissidents were less coordinated, but nearly as disruptive. Several vocal opponents loudly jeered the revised DOT plan, which would convert Kent Ave to a one-way street and divert truck traffic along North 11th St. More on that here.

“Why are we here tonight?” the presenter asked.

“To be heard!” the crowd in the auditorium of P.S. 250 hollered back.

Finger Building Owner Agrees to Height Cap

June 1, 2009 By Phil DePaolo Leave a Comment

I just spoke with Andrew Zobler from GFI Capital, the newest owner of the infamous Finger Building at 144 N 8th St (between Bedford and Berry).  Zobler confirmed to me that the building will remain at its current 110 feet height (10 stories). GFI Capital wishes to improve community relations and decided not to build to the full 220 feet allowed by the BSA (Board of Standard and Appeals), he says.  As noted in the Daily News, the building will now be called “The Albero”—Italian for tree. This is welcome news for Stop Our Supersizing (SOS), a group of dedicated Williamsburg activists who fought a long and expensive legal battle. I wish the new developers good luck (as long as they don’t change their minds!).
