Brooklyn Record Riot @ Warsaw on Sunday

October 24, 2013 By WG News + Arts Leave a Comment

brooklyn record riot warsaw greenpointDJs, vinyl, kielbasa and beer—it’s the Brooklyn Record Riot. The needle hits the vinyl Sunday at Greepoint’s Warsaw, where the BRR features 40+ tables of music stuff in all formats and genres from a diverse group of dealers, some of whom travel hundreds of miles to to get to the show.

Check out the Quebecois psych stuff from Josh Rock of Montreal, reggae stock from Virginia’s Tim Harris, funk 45 action from Barry Soltz, and who knows what the Baker Brothers of Allentown, PA will have up their sleeve (answer: plenty of cheap, good stuff as usual). And then there’s the dollar room, filled with the weird and not-so-weird, vinyl, CDs, books, DVDs—all for a buck.

Rock and sway to a great line-up of SEVEN female DJs, including Girlsoul and The Empress. Enjoy great Polish beer and kielbasi, provided by the Warsaw, all day long.

Oakland’s Juniper Ridge is packing up their California mountains-in-a-bottle distillery and bringing it to Brooklyn with a pop up shop, opening this Friday.

You may have seen the “Wilderness Fragrance Distillery” products at Franklin Street’s Alter Brooklyn, or at any one of NYC’s Fellow Barber shops; now’s your chance to experience the process that distills the essence of wild-foraged plants into their vaunted line of colognes, soaps, and incense.

“La Sardina 35mm camera; an entirely new, fresh analogue wide-angle camera from Lomography that channels the design of the humble sardine can.”

The “rent pandemic,” as we know it, has caught up with the premier design electronics shop Dijital Fix which has made its home in the Bedford Mini-Mall for six years. They are closing their doors on Sunday, Sept 29 due to the inability to come to an equitable agreement with the landlord regarding their rent.

“They are hilariously nearly tripling the rent,” said David Auerbach, the owner, who says in an email to WG that they are looking for a new home in the ‘burg. They have some good leads, and they look forward to reopening soon with “a bright new store, with a revitalized concept.”

The one constant at B. Conte boutique in Williamsburg is that things are always changing. Friendly-priced merchandise flies off shelves, to be swapped with new pieces from famous labels and up-and-coming designers. Regular trunk shows introduce cocktail-sipping customers to an influx of fresh accessories, both antique and au courant. Even the 750-square-foot retail space pulls double duty as a gallery, with the work of local artists rotating on the walls. “What I like best about my store is how it’s in steady flux,” says owner Bernadette Conte.

“iPhone 6” Debuts in Brooklyn

Two days before the iPhone 5 was set to land on shelves at Apple Stores, Leon Reid IV preemptively unveiled his “iPhone 6” last night at his studio in Greenpoint. Wearing his Sunday-best charcoal suit and red bowtie, the 33-year-old street artist gave a Steve Jobs–style PowerPoint presentation that revealed all the stats about his new device. For instance, he said, it’s “three-times heavier than the iPhone 5” and “starts at $799.”

So what exactly is this technological breakthrough? It’s a fully nonfunctional sculpture with a real iPhone for a body and cartoonish arms and legs made out of resin. The character cradles a miniature man in its right hand and ominously threatens to poke the poor guy with an extended finger, just as we do to our own phones. “One day, we will live in a world where our smartphones are smarter than us,” Reid explained, “and we will be the devices for our smartphones.”
