The Left-Handed Woman, a.k.a. Die linkshändige Frau, Spectacle Theatre

August 24, 2014 By WG News + Arts Leave a Comment

Despite boasting an international cast,The Left-Handed Woman is an understated and unadorned portrayal of a single mother’s quotidian life, comparable in its sensibility to some of the work of Margarethe von Trotta, Helke Sander, and Helma Sanders-Brahms.

Edith Clever (the star of Eric Rohmer’s Kleist adaptation, The Marquise of O) plays Marianne, a German living in Paris with her young son, Stefan. Her husband Bruno Ganz (Wings of Desire) returns from Helsinki, where he has spent several months and learned only one word in Finnish: olut (‘beer’).

Frog Eyes, P.S. I Love You, at Rough Trade, 8/23

August 23, 2014 By WG News + Arts Leave a Comment

frog eyes band from british columbiaAlmost a year after he was diagnosed with throat cancer, Frog Eyes’ Carey Mercer was been cleared to start performing again. Tonight’s Rough Trade show is the New York stop on the band’s celebratory tour of North America.

Shuddering, intense, grit-and-glam cabaret from Victoria, BC. Trembling, combustible rock magic – complete with a hoary growl barking lyrical turns of phrase over heavy beats, skronk, and aching beauty. The band has been turning heads wherever they go, and can count Black Dice, the Animal Collective, Wolf Parade, Mountain Goats, Hot Hot Heat, Polyphonic Spree, and John Vanderslice among their legions of diehard fans.

You Are Worthy: She Keeps Bees kicks off North American tour for “Eight Houses” at Cameo Gallery, 8/21

August 21, 2014 By WG News + Arts Leave a Comment

she keeps bees, 8 houses album cover

She Keeps Bees’ debut album, Minisink Hotel, was described by NYC’s Other Music as “the best album you’ve never heard.” Nests, their second full-length record, was admired by the Guardian as “sparse, soulful and defiantly retro.” Their third LP, Dig On, was praised by the BBC as “an album of fire, spirit, and sweat.”

Now, Jessica Larrabee and Andy LaPlant are touring in support of their fourth album, Eight Houses, kicking it off Thursday night at Cameo Gallery. “It Is What It Is”, the first single released from the album, features vocals by Sharon Van Etten. Of Larrabee, Van Etten says “She has one of the best voices I have ever heard, and she has more soul in one finger than most female singers have in our scene.”
