Just Announced: Crash Richard at Union Pool

June 23, 2014 By WG News + Arts Leave a Comment

crash at union pool

Christopher “Crash” Richard made his name as vocalist/percussionist for Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes. Before joining the band, Crash was the lead singer of LA-based indie rockers The Deadly Syndrome. Hardly Criminal is his solo debut.

Produced and engineered by the multitalented Ed Sharpe lead guitarist, Mark Noseworthy, (and featuring friends from the Zeros, Dawes, The Mystic Valley Band and more…) Hardly Criminal is the culmination of all that is strange and sad, hilarious and harmonious, about Crash’s own true tale. It is his story – moving, funny, weird, and stunningly beautiful. -Ticketfly

Private Osman at Spectacle Theatre

June 23, 2014 By WG News + Arts Leave a Comment

private osman at spectacle theatre

The strangest entry in Güney’s oeuvre, PRIVATE OSMAN belongs neither with the guns-and-muscle revenge rippers of his first decade in cinema, nor with the sheep-and-tractor social portraits of his last.

The titular character, played by Güney himself, is a hapless photojournalist who has returned from military service and now makes his living in Istanbul by manufacturing spectacular crimes that he and his colleague-girlfriend will then be the first to cover. Constantly ducking from the law, shooting up bars, and starting fights, Osman is a kind of devil-may-care Peter Parker, a Belmondo with a camera. His racket eventually lands him in the thick of a crime syndicate’s real intrigues, and he ends up having to walk more of the walk than he expected. Osman takes on more and more of the traits of Güney’s traditional “Ugly King” persona, culminating in a half-hour long showdown in which many bad guys get shot from impressive distances.

A Conversation with Jean-Pierre Gorin at Light Industry

Light Industry hosts a conversation with Jean-Pierre Gorin, one of cinema’s most erudite and incisive figures. Gorin began his career in filmmaking by advising Jean-Luc Godard on La Chinoise (1967) and Le Gai savoir (1968), but soon rose to international prominence after forming the Dziga Vertov Group with Godard in ‘68.

Foregoing singular authorship, the collective produced a series of formally radical and politically uncompromising works, stretching from Un Film comme les autres (1968) to Letter to Jane (1972), that rethought Brechtian technique on cinematic terms and considered the situation in Europe and the US during the revolutions of the late 60s and their aftermath.

in bloom georgia film at the picture show in greenpoint

Set in the newly independent Georgia after the collapse of the Soviet Union, IN BLOOM is the story of the friendship between two girls, as they face men’s dominance, early marriage and disillusioned love.

“Built around radiant performances from its two young leads, In Bloom is a beautifully observed slice-of-life drama subtly interwoven with thriller elements and a gently pro-feminist message about young girls defying ancient patriarchal traditions…” –Stephen Dalton, Hollywood Reporter
