“There is no season when such pleasant and sunny spots may be lighted on, and produce so pleasant an effect on the feelings, as now in October.” —Nathaniel Hawthorne

And there is no better way to celebrate the turning of the season than by partaking of the bounty at our neighborhood farmers’ markets. Check out the Saturday pumpkin patch for the kids, a whole page of recipes for in-season kale, and a beautiful apple and pear pie.

End Your Summer w/ the Endless Summer Pop of Cayucas @ The Knitting Factory

August 20, 2013 By WG News + Arts Leave a Comment

cayucasCelebrate the last gasp of summer with Cayucas’ brand of musical sunshine at The Knitting Factory on August 28.
Cayucas (ky-yook-us) borrows its name from the legendary surf town on the SoCal coast, just north of the band’s Santa Monica home.

Bigfoot, their indie-surf-pop album debut, brings us closer to that town’s dreamy, lazy vibe while “summer’s starting to drift away” here in the Big Apple.

Red Rose & Lavender Floral Design Studio and Organic Garden Center

Rose Red & Lavender has redone their shop, and they’re having a sale to celebrate. The shop is gorgeous, and owner Kimberly is a killer combination of floral designer, gardener, biologist, chemist, and shop owner. She also writes a column for WG. Here is one of her articles: Container Gardening in North Brooklyn.

Kimberly says “We’ve changed, in a good way. We recently changed our shop and made things bigger, fresher, and brighter. In the meantime, we are having a huge cleaning house sale and you can save BIG (up to 80% off) on things like hydroponic kits, canning supplies (just in time for tomato season), tools and this and that.”

Funny Stories at Brooklyn Brewery

July 18, 2013 By WG News + Arts Leave a Comment

Comedy readings at Brooklyn Brewery, co-curated by Brooklyn Based and Tom Shillue.

Comedy readings at Brooklyn Brewery, co-curated by Brooklyn Based and Tom Shillue.

An impressive line-up of writers will be presenting their funniest at Brooklyn Brewery this evening. The ongoing event is co-hosted by Brooklyn Based with comedian and storyteller Tom Shillue (filling in tonight for Tom is Sean Donnelly). Jon Reiss is a regular writer for WG; we are very psyched he is doing his comedy thing too!

Sean Donnelly, who regularly headlines at Caroline’s and Gotham, will be hosting, and joining us is the one and only Sara Schaefer of MTV’s Nikki & Sara Live, stand-up Nick Vatterott, and two special guests from Brooklyn Based, writer Jon Reiss and artist Steven Weinberg. An extra-special surprise guest might take mic, too, but you’ll have to make your way to Brooklyn Brewery to find out. Tickets cost $10 for all this entertainment, plus special guests, and a beer. Doors open at 8, the shenanagins begin at 8:30.—Brooklyn Based
