Op/Ed: Williamsburg Walks … All Over Us

March 22, 2010 By WG News + Arts Leave a Comment

One Festival Day, Not Six, Could Bring Relief

The idea for a community-run festival celebrating Williamsburg’s unique character is a good one; but the Bedford Avenue commercial corridor is already too saturated with crowds, noise, street peddlers, and sanitation issues to withstand the present six-event schedule of Williamsburg Walks (WW) and the thousands of visitors it attracts.

Nominally a city-sponsored event, loosely supported by various profit and non-profit partners, WW’s coordination has over the past three years fallen increasingly into the hands of Neighbors Allied for Good Growth (NAG), a grassroots advocacy organization that has led the community in challenging environmental hazards, developers, and the city’s rezoning process. NAG, unfortunately, appears to have inherited the undemocratic management style that has characterized WW from the start; in its role as coordinator, it has also begun to hear complaints from residents and merchants that the annual six-time summer street fair is excessive.

Popular Internet blogger Miss Heather’s following includes the mainstream press.

Anyone who reads the blog New York Shitty knows about El Blablazo. And anyone who reads the blog knows that the blog’s owner and writer, Miss Heather, loves El Blablazo. Which is why, on a windy, wet Saturday in early December, I found myself heading to El Blablazo, in the company of Miss Heather, carrying a Ziploc bag filled with Christmas tree lights.

Kings Pharmacy Face-Off with Duane Reade

kings_pharm_b_batchThe debate over whether chain stores in Williamsburg are good for the neighborhood is nothing new. Indeed, Reverend Billy (a crusader for sustainable consumerism whose 2009 mayoral campaign was endorsed by L Magazine) launched a massive protest in 2001 when it was rumored a Starbucks was opening on Bedford Avenue. For nearly ten years, however, the main drag of the ‘Burg has remained relatively chain-free. Until now. Duane Reade opened a store at the Northside Piers on Kent Avenue in September, and recently a “coming soon” sign from Duane Reade appeared on Bedford and North 3rd Street— right across the street from Kings Pharmacy.

Kings opened in 2002, and co-owner and manager Anthony Baglino said they’ve maintained a regular customer base ever since. “When we first moved into the neighborhood,” he said, “there were Duane Reade bags everywhere.” That changed after Kings opened. Baglino estimates that before Duane Reade opened on Kent, “Ninety-nine percent of the people who live here were shopping either here or at Northside Pharmacy.”

Preaching a message of anti-consumerism and a return to the bygone days of New York City, is the Reverend Billy (a.k.a. Bill Talen). The reverend and his activist performance group The Church of Stop Shopping, have a history of activism. He has railed and thumped outside the Disney Store in Times Square. He was involved with the Morgan Spurlock-produced documentary “What Would Jesus Buy.” He has a 35-member choir and an eight-piece band. Since the late 90’s the Reverend Billy has positioned himself as a Savonarola against the retail renaissance, pitching hellfire and damnation at the somnambulant mall culture creeping into our vibrant city. Exorcising demons directly from cash registers at Victoria’s Secret. Laying healing hands upon ATM machines. Exhorting midtown tourists not to spend another dime, hallelujah. He is the rev with the big hair. The hipster’s Billy Graham. An icon of New York street life of our times.
