“Bent Arm Violin” by Ken Butler

By William Allen

This group show, called “Wackadoodle,” thumbs its nose at highbrow irony and aesthetics, with seven artists steeped in the traditions of North Brooklyn (conceptual art, action painting, and sculptural collage). By design there is no theme, only fresh, bright painting, drawing, sculptures, video art, and prints.

The Rules of Grace—Performance art thrives at 840 Broadway

A giant poster of a brain tells you you’re at the right apartment. Under the screaming wheels of the elevated J train, and up the flight of stairs, is a sizable loft painted in gray.

Grace Exhibition Space, a converted loft at 840 Broadway, is one of the few performance art galleries in New York City, ridding itself of a stage and focusing on the immersion of artist and audience. With a suggested $10 donation at the door, the gallery hosts artist talks and art events every other Thursday and Friday, providing several hours of performance by both local and international artists.

piano at firehouse space

By Laura Brown

On a casual evening stroll it’s unlikely you’d simply chance upon The Firehouse Space on Frost Street, but if you did, you’d surely be intrigued enough to enter. The Firehouse Space is compelling not just because it’s a beautifully renovated former firehouse from bygone days but most primarily because of the dynamic performances you’ll find there. It’s a place to experience the innovative and the inspirational.

Big Things Writ Small

May 21, 2012 By Robert Egert Leave a Comment

Christian Nguyen “Modern Surfaces” 2012 Acrylic on Plexiglas.

Scale is a blade that cuts in two directions: Big often signifies importance, especially in an environment where space is at a premium. Conversely, we all know that Good Things Come in Small Packages.

Small Sculpture (by big people) is an exhibition of miniature sculpture that is a fascinating study of how the scale of things can change our perception of space and our bodies while toying with our expectations. The exhibit delivers intimate moments of delight and surprise while forcing us to slow down, look again and reject first impressions in favor of a second examination.

The December 26, 2011 New York Observer article entitled “Campus Confidential”  discussed the possible irregular procurement process in connection with the joint venture winners, Cornell University and the Israeli firm Technion-Israel Institute of Technology (CTJV), who will receive $100 million in grant funding to build “a new engineering mecca” on Roosevelt Island. I strongly recommend that the community engage politicians, businesses, and educational institutions for alliances and partnerships to promote the growth of high-tech facilities in Williamsburg-Greenpoint.

The explosive growth of high-tech firms in New York City is undoubtedly exciting. This is the birth of new 21st-century technology that is replacing the moribund and defunct blue collar manufacturing of the 20th century. Brooklyn’s DUMBO can attest to the successful conversion of manufacturing and warehouse buildings into high-tech firms. Even downtown Brooklyn will spawn additional high-tech facilities, as New York University is interested in establishing its applied science and urban facility at the former New York City Transit building on Jay Street.
