April 28, 2013 By Kelley Shields Leave a Comment

CADET USA co-creators Raul Arevalo and Brad Schmidt found the vintage jacket at Brooklyn Flea. The buttons on the jacket say “CADET.” and was a source of inspiration for them. Their Aviator Pant is their signature pant based on a vintage US Air Force pant. Their store is located at 46 N. 6th St in Williamsburg, and their apparel factory is located in Bushwick, Brooklyn. What is driving the rash of men-centric retail environments in this area, such as barber shops/shaving parlors and higher-end apparel boutiques like Barber & Supply, HW Carter & Sons, Cadet, Robinson Brooklyn, Genuine Motorworks and By Robert James? Could it have something to do with the “recovering” economy?

Post Pocket-Poem Day Report: Aaargh!! Reading poems to strangers takes beer—and balls.

April 21, 2013 By Sarah Schmerler Leave a Comment

DATELINE: April 21, 2013, Brooklyn. REPORTER: Sarah Schmerler

It was much harder than I expected. I mean, I have nerve. And I have creative ideas. But reality did not cooperate with my over-active imagination of just what would happen on April 18th, official “Poem in Your Pocket Day.”

by 8:00AM:  I had already read a bawdy poem to the proprietor of my local coffee shop. He liked it. See?: photo

Small Businesses Demand Compensation for L Train Closures

March 15, 2012 By WG News + Arts Leave a Comment

The lure of Williamsburg is that it’s just one short subway stop away from Manhattan. But when the trains are not running, it might as well not exist. It’s hardly “the vibrant street scene” envisioned in the 2005 rezoning for the neighborhood, and unfortunately it’s the businesses that are left holding the bag. The Williamsburg neighborhood depends on the L train.

The final straw occurred this past November when there was a non-disclosed scheduled shutdown for construction by the MTA, regrettably, on the busiest shopping days of the year: Thanksgiving weekend’s Black Friday and Small Business Saturday. What were the managers at the MTA smoking?

Unfortunately, the MTA relies on 10-year-old records, from a period when very few people came to the neighborhood on weekends. In the meanwhile, ridership has increased a whopping 141% above capacity. There are as many people using the L train on weekends and late nights as during rush hours. It has become just about the most crowded subway line in the city.

From the outside it may appear to be just another industrial warehouse, but furniture firm From the Source is a diamond in the rough along Greenpoint’s waterfront. Beyond the unassuming façade, 23,000 square feet unfold into a vast labyrinth of storerooms and work spaces filled with dramatic Indonesian wood furnishings.

Simian Mobile Disco, JDH DJ Sets at Cameo Gallery, 8/02

August 2, 2014 By WG News + Arts Leave a Comment

simian mobile disco whorlJames and Jas of Simian Mobile Disco, though quite different in personality, are both modest fellows. In conversation each of them, more than once, puts the success of SMD down to sheer luck – however, this is not really true. Yes, they were in the right place at the right time in some senses, but it takes an awful lot more than that to bring an album as sonically glorious and ambitious as Unpatterns to as broad an audience as they are managing to reach.

In April, Simian Mobile Disco trekked out to the Southern California desert, taking with them just two modular synths, two sequencers, and a mixer. Over a period of three days, they jammed and rehearsed in the desert, culminating in a one off sold out show at Pappy & Harriet’s, Pioneertown, allowing 900 fans to witness part of the recording process. Those sessions, taped under the desert sky, became the basis for their brand new album “Whorl”. Now, after completing mixing and mastering, they are pleased to announce that the final studio album will be released through Anti Records (Tom Waits, Kate Bush) on September the 8th.
