Community Farmers Markets, a Growing Trend

October 12, 2012 By Mary W. Yeung Leave a Comment

community markets

So many fall apples overflowing at the green markets. Honey Crisp, Winesap, Russet, Gala and Orins, enough apples to make apple butter, hard apple cider, apple pie, even parsnip and apple soup. Ginger Gold, Fortune and Winesap are considered heirloom varieties, while Northern Spy and Jonathan are New York natives, discovered in the 1800‘s. They are good for eating and baking. Mutsu, originally from Japan, are now thriving in upstate New York. The wide selection of apples have inspired me to think outside of the box. Tired of using the same old Golden Delicious in a pie? Try Jonagold instead, you’ll taste the difference in sweetness and texture.

Going to the green market on the weekend has never been easier. This year, Community Farmers Markets, has opened two new green markets in the nabe, one on the south side of picturesque McGolrick Park (Russell St.) in Greenpoint and another at the spunky Cooper Park (Maspeth Ave.) in East Williamsburg. There, you’ll find an array of farm produce along with enough artisanal food to make your weekend just that much more yummy.

The WG Does SXSW: Music Mayhem Begins

March 17, 2011 By Stacey Brook Leave a Comment

Nicole Atkins and the Black Sea @ Anton’s.

It turns out, once the music portion of the SXSW festival starts, you have exactly two options when it comes to what you’re doing at any given point in the day. You are either watching live music, or you’re eating.  No exceptions. This, in theory, sounds incredible — two of my favorite things, all day long, for five days in a row? HELL YEAH. And yet, in practice? Let’s just say, it’s only day two, and I’m having trouble standing up for long periods of time. Also, I need to eat an apple. Some greens. Really, anything but a taco, or a variation thereof. Let’s look into how I got to this state.

When you’re running around Austin at breakneck pace all day long, you get hungry.  Duh.  And the easiest food to grab on the go comes to you from an endless variety of trucks, parked on Austin’s sidewalks and in her parking lots. Some of the finer fare I’ve sampled from these mealhouses on wheels has included the tasty Argentinian empanadas from mmmpanada (they also make an asparagus and proscuitto empanada that may be on the menu for tonight), and a divine “pork chop bun” from an asian fusion cart on Austin’s 4th street, called Whazabi. When I ordered this little guy, I had no idea what to expect, and what I got was a lightly fried pork chop, served with lemongrass and asian-style barbeque sauce. Worth flying to Austin for.

Radio Heads: 2 New Radio Stations Making Waves

June 30, 2010 By Genia Gould Leave a Comment

wrfb radio free brooklynThere’s nothing like radio to connect people to people, people to places, people to music, and all that’s happening out there. Two Greenpoint entrepreneurs talk about their new streaming internet radio stations—Radio Free Brooklyn and Newtown Radio—and their growing audiences.

Interview with Dexter Taylor of Radio Free Brooklyn (WRFB)

WG: How did Radio Free Brooklyn come about?
DT: I didn’t set out to start a radio station. I thought it would be a good way to promote my film school in Greenpoint.

JoAnn Berman Electric on The Runway

February 23, 2010 By WG News + Arts Leave a Comment

The JoAnn Berman “Thunderbirds” show was a standing ovation event at The Green Shows (held at The Green House in the LES), during Fashion Week. In attendance were WWD, Vogue, Marie Claire, and Seventeen, as well as model/designer Nicole Murphy (former wife of Eddie Murphy) who had her picture taken with Ms. Berman. She used the Aretha Franklin song Rock Steady to open the show, and proved to be rock steady as model after model flew down the runway to applause. She incorporated her quasi hip hop  graffiti canvases into a montage of phantasmargorical colors and textures as if one were tripping away the night. She proves that the future of Green couture is a trick in her bag which never tires.  Pics after jump.
